MAAIF DISTRIBUTES ORGANIC FERTILIZER TO BOOST COFFEE PRODUCTIVITY IN GOMBA

The Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF) has intensified efforts to enhance coffee production in Gomba District through the distribution of organic fertilizer, Fertiplus, to coffee farmers across the region.

The initiative, spearheaded by the MAAIF Coffee Department, is aimed at revitalizing coffee plantations—particularly trees that were stumped or have shown signs of declining productivity. The adoption of Fertiplus is part of a broader government strategy to improve yields, promote sustainable agriculture, and uplift household incomes for coffee-dependent communities.

According to MAAIF officials, the use of organic fertilizers not only increases soil fertility and coffee productivity but also supports long-term environmental conservation and climate-smart farming practices.

RDC Commends Government Support

During the distribution exercise, the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) extended heartfelt appreciation to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and the Government of Uganda for their continuous support to farmers.

“This intervention demonstrates the government’s unwavering commitment to improving the livelihoods of its people,” the RDC noted.

He further emphasized that such programs strengthen collaboration between citizens and government, fostering unity and development.

Farmers Equipped Through Training on Sustainable Practices

As part of the activity, the MAAIF Regional Agricultural Officer– Mr Cyiza Mathius conducted a practical training session targeting coffee farmers.

The training focused on:

Sustainable coffee farming techniques

Improving soil health using organic inputs

Long-term productivity and income generation strategies

Farmers were encouraged to adopt environmentally friendly methods to boost resilience, increase yields, and ensure the sustainability of their coffee enterprises.

A Step Towards Transforming Rural Livelihoods

The intervention aligns with Uganda’s national vision of promoting agro-industrialization through improved productivity and value addition in key agricultural sectors. For Gomba District, where coffee remains a major economic activity, this initiative is expected to create meaningful change in farmer incomes and household wellbeing.

Local leaders called upon beneficiaries to make effective use of the fertilizer and knowledge acquired, ensuring maximum impact and accountability.
